How to make oat milk at home (recipe)

Earlier this year we made the switch from cow’s milk to a plant based milk, and oat milk is our favourite dairy alternative. I have wanted to make my own oat milk for months – during the first lockdown! I finally started to make it a few weeks ago and I can’t believe how easy and cheap it is! Here is how to make oat milk.

how to make oat milk

what you need to make homemade oat milk

how to make oat milk

Making oat milk needs the following ingredients:

  • Water
  • Rolled oats

You will also need the following equipment:

  • Bottle or bottles to store your oat milk in (I love these Kilner ones)
  • A food processor or blender (we have the Ninja blender)
  • Straining cloths
  • Funnel
  • Jug or bowl to strain the oat milk into

Directions for making oat milk

You can make this oat milk without soaking your oats, however I found that when I don’t soak the oats the milk tastes a lot weaker. I like to strain my oats for at least 2 hours, but I sometimes leave them overnight.

You will need 1 part oats to 4 parts water. You can measure that however you want. Here I did 1 cup of oats into each bottle, and then 4 cups of water. It doesn’t quite look like that due to the oats expanding though.

The following morning I just used the Ninja to blend up the mixture. I did this for about a minute for each bottle.

This is where I get very high-tech and stick some straining cloth to my jug using cellotape. Just make sure it stays on, whether that is with an elastic band, tape or magic.

Then strain your mixture. This can take ages if you don’t poke it with a spoon.

Then pour the strained mixture into your bottle or bottles, and bam, you have oat milk!

Storing your homemade oat milk

Store your oat milk in the fridge, and it will last for up to 5-6 days.

You will know when it is off because it will smell!

Will this oat milk separate?

Yes!

Most milk alternatives do separate, but al you need to do is shake it up afterwards.

Is oat milk vegan?

You would think that oat milk would be vegan, but just watch out for the oats you buy. Some are fortified with vitamin B12.

Does this work in tea and coffee?

It does!

Can you make Yorkshire puddings with oat milk?

Absolutely! This Yorkshire pudding recipe for 2 can use oat milk.

What to do with the leftover oats

If you are keen to reduce your food waste then there are a few things you can do with the leftover oats.

You can use them in receipts like muffins, banana bread, cookies and pancakes. You can also add them to smoothies.

You know that saying that a Sunday well spent brin You know that saying that a Sunday well spent brings a week of content?

That’s been our whole entire day today! Lots going on this week in our personal lives, business (deliveries, checking in with web developers about our biggest project to date) and health stuff (hospital first thing tomorrow for me 😩) so today we have spent the day having a deep clean, declutter session, getting odd jobs done and even boiling eggs for easy snacks this week. I’m nothing if not thorough.

It means getting to spend some nice chilled out time reading a book, drinking some biscuit flavoured tea and winding down.

Do you use your Sunday to prep for the week ahead?

I don't know about you, but being home more has me I don't know about you, but being home more has meant that our energy bills have been increasing. We are on a mission to cut back on our energy usage and save some money. Getting a smart meter would definitely help us to keep an eye on our usage in an attempt to cut down on our energy bills and we can't wait to get one.

AD Did you know that there are even smart prepay meters? It means that as customers it is easier to track your usage and top up from the comfort of your own home.

Check out my stories where I am sharing 5 ways we are reducing our energy usage to save money.

One of my favourite, and most unusual tips, is to pop a clean, dry towel into every load of laundry in the tumble

dryer. This cuts down on the drying time which then helps us to use less energy.

A year ago today I took the biggest decision of my A year ago today I took the biggest decision of my life and had a gastric bypass to improve my health.

And improve my health it did! I have reversed my diabetes and discovered I have cancer.

My journey wasn’t straight forward - I’m not where I want to be but I’m well on my way 💪🏻

Weight loss surgery is a tool and it doesn’t fix your brain. It doesn’t fix a life time of emotional eating. But it helps along the journey 💪🏻

I keep being asked for an update but I feel like there isn’t much to say. I still struggle to eat nectarines and pears. Hitting my daily protein goals is hard work. I’ve lost a lot of my hair but I like it. I am getting stuck in the same 5lb bracket where my weight is hovering, but I don’t feel as though I have the mental strength to push through right now. If you’ve seen my stories recently then you’ll know that I’m in a very bad place mentally right now.

Jars of...Motivation! Did these little jars save Jars of...Motivation!

Did these little jars save me from a serious head funk?

Why yes they did!

Let me explain. I've got a lot of ideas and projects on to go. Looking at my to do lists is OVERWHELMING. What do I do instead? Nothing!

Mental health and The Overwhelm had got to me. There was no 'new year, new me' this year. There was 'new year, same depressed me under a cloud of darkness who isn't getting things done'.

Until my business mentor stepped in and we came up with this strategy to make jars for some of my projects, and write out tasks to do for those projects.

Now instead of looking at a to do list, getting overwhelmed and doing nothing I have some pretty jars to pull a task out from. Okay, it isn't perfect - sometimes I pull something out that needs another task doing first so I just pop it back inside and pick out another one.

If you are struggling then I would really recommend this technique! It got me out of a funk.
