Earlier this year we made the switch from cow’s milk to a plant based milk, and oat milk is our favourite dairy alternative. I have wanted to make my own oat milk for months – during the first lockdown! I finally started to make it a few weeks ago and I can’t believe how easy and cheap it is! Here is how to make oat milk.
what you need to make homemade oat milk
Making oat milk needs the following ingredients:
- Water
- Rolled oats
You will also need the following equipment:
- Bottle or bottles to store your oat milk in (I love these Kilner ones)
- A food processor or blender (we have the Ninja blender)
- Straining cloths
- Funnel
- Jug or bowl to strain the oat milk into
Directions for making oat milk
You can make this oat milk without soaking your oats, however I found that when I don’t soak the oats the milk tastes a lot weaker. I like to strain my oats for at least 2 hours, but I sometimes leave them overnight.
You will need 1 part oats to 4 parts water. You can measure that however you want. Here I did 1 cup of oats into each bottle, and then 4 cups of water. It doesn’t quite look like that due to the oats expanding though.
The following morning I just used the Ninja to blend up the mixture. I did this for about a minute for each bottle.
This is where I get very high-tech and stick some straining cloth to my jug using cellotape. Just make sure it stays on, whether that is with an elastic band, tape or magic.
Then strain your mixture. This can take ages if you don’t poke it with a spoon.
Then pour the strained mixture into your bottle or bottles, and bam, you have oat milk!
Storing your homemade oat milk
Store your oat milk in the fridge, and it will last for up to 5-6 days.
You will know when it is off because it will smell!
Will this oat milk separate?
Yes!
Most milk alternatives do separate, but al you need to do is shake it up afterwards.
Is oat milk vegan?
You would think that oat milk would be vegan, but just watch out for the oats you buy. Some are fortified with vitamin B12.
Does this work in tea and coffee?
It does!
Can you make Yorkshire puddings with oat milk?
Absolutely! This Yorkshire pudding recipe for 2 can use oat milk.
What to do with the leftover oats
If you are keen to reduce your food waste then there are a few things you can do with the leftover oats.
You can use them in receipts like muffins, banana bread, cookies and pancakes. You can also add them to smoothies.
