Why sugar scrubs are good for your skin

Sugar scrubs are a lovely way to treat your skin to a bit of TLC. The natural granules in sugar work as a gentle exfoliant, helping to buff away dead skin cells and leave your skin feeling soft, smooth, and refreshed. Unlike some harsher exfoliants, sugar is gentle enough for regular use and is less likely to cause irritation.

When combined with nourishing oils, a sugar scrub can also help lock in moisture, leaving your skin hydrated and glowing. The best part? You can make them at home using simple, natural ingredients – no long list of chemicals needed!

What you will need

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1/16 pound (1 cube) clear glycerin melt & pour soap base
  • 1/4 cup pure cane sugar
  • Soap Scrub Mold
  • 5 drops Pina Colada scented fragrance oil
  • 1 drop Lemon soap colorant
  • Glass measuring cup

Place your soap base in a microwave-safe jug or bowl and heat on high for around 15 seconds. If it hasn’t fully melted, continue in short 5-second bursts until it’s completely smooth and pourable. Be careful not to overheat, as this can affect the texture of the final bars.

Once melted, stir in the olive oil, granulated sugar, fragrance oil, and a few drops of soap colourant.

Mix everything together thoroughly until you have an even texture and colour throughout. The sugar should be evenly distributed, creating a lovely exfoliating texture.

Carefully pour the mixture into your soap moulds, tapping the mould gently on the counter to remove any air bubbles and help it settle evenly. Leave the bars to set at room temperature for around 1 hour, or until they’re completely firm.

Once set, gently pop the bars out of the moulds. Store them in an airtight container in a cool, dry place until you’re ready to use or gift them. They’ll stay fresh and fragrant for several weeks.

How to store your pina colada sugar scrubs

To keep your Pina Colada sugar scrub fresh and effective, store it in an airtight container away from direct sunlight and moisture. A glass jar with a screw-on lid or a plastic container with a tight seal both work well. As the scrub contains oils, it’s best to use clean, dry hands or a spoon to scoop it out to avoid introducing water, which can cause bacteria or mould over time. If stored properly, your sugar scrub should last for several weeks – just give it a quick stir if the oil and sugar begin to separate a little.

How to gift homemade pina colada sugar scrubs

Homemade sugar scrubs make brilliant gifts for friends, family, teachers, or even as little favours at parties or baby showers. They feel luxurious but are surprisingly easy and affordable to make. Simply spoon your Piña Colada sugar scrub into a clean, airtight jar or container, and dress it up with a ribbon, a handwritten label, or even a small wooden scoop for a finishing touch. If you’re gifting during warmer months, you might also want to include a note suggesting the scrub be kept somewhere cool. A thoughtful homemade beauty gift like this always feels extra special because you made it yourself.
