Free things to do over Christmas

Watch Christmas films

There’s little better than getting all snugly and settling down for a Christmas film with your favourite snacks (hot chocolate is mandatory too). You can turn it into a weekend activity and go for a movie marathon if you want. If you don’t have any Christmas films on DVD then you might find some for free on free streaming websites, or ask your friends and family if you can borrow some.

Hand deliver your Christmas cards

Stamps can be expensive, so hand deliver any Christmas cards that you can. This can be a fun activity for the whole family if you arrange something with your recipients. If you are lucky you’ll be invited in for a warm drink and a mince pie too!

Drive/walk around looking at Christmas lights

This activity is so much fun and one we do every single year. I love looking at the Christmas lights put up every year, whether it be down the high street or individual homes. This never fails to make me feel festive, and if I need some extra Christmas cheer then this is my go to activity.

Attend a Christmas service

Your local church is likely to have a Christmas carol service on in the run up to Christmas, and attendees are often bribed with a free mince pie and a festive drink (mulled wine perhaps!). This is a great festive activity that doesn’t cost a penny!

Decorate your tree or home

Magically transforming your home into a Christmas wonderland is a great feeling, isn’t it? This is a fun, free activity that everyone can join in with. Simply use last year’s decorations or see what you can DIY to turn your home into a festive wonderland.

Go to light switch ons

Christmas light switch ons are either your idea of heaven or hell. Although they can get crowded, and I am often rammed by pushchairs, they are a fun, free activity that helps to get me in the Christmas mood.

Play board games together

I am guilty of only getting the board games out on Christmas day – if you are like me in this respect then why not play some board games before the big day? I love to make a festive food picnic, get some drinks together and let the games begin. It is one of the great free things to do for Christmas that the whole family can get involved in.

Wrap gifts together

Wrapping gifts together is a fun Christmas activity that doesn’t have to cost a penny. If you don’t have any Christmas wrapping paper then you can DIY your Christmas wrapping paper. Check out all these wonderful pins on Pinterest for inspiration.

Write a letter to Santa

Writing a letter to Santa can be a fun activity for any age – even your 30 year old husband!

Bake some Christmas goodies

This activity is free if you have ingredients in your cupboard. You can make anything from biscuits to sweets, and perhaps even make some home made goodies as Christmas gifts.

Make some Christmas decorations

You can turn everyday items into Christmas decorations – whether you bake gingerbread men to hang from the tree, or you make festive pompoms, making Christmas decorations is a fun, free activity for the whole family.

Download free Christmas printables

Whether it is a crossword, Christmas themed colouring in page or a door sign, there are plenty of free Christmas printables available to keep you or your little ones entertained for hours.

Visit a Christmas market

Although Christmas markets are trying to sell you something, there is fun to be had just by wandering around them! Wrap up warm and have a stroll, getting ideas for Christmas and enjoying any free samples on offer. It is one of many great free things to do for Christmas.

Donate to your food bank

Did you know that you can collect free food to donate to your local food bank? Using cashback apps like Shopmium, Checkout Smart and ClickSnap, you can get freebies that can be donated to your local food bank. What’s more, if you are new to Shopmium, you can enter code khemyggz to get a FREE jar of Nutella.

You can also shop your own cupboards to see if there is anything suitable for donating to a food bank.

Eat Christmas food

What is it about Christmas that means we buy food we only get at Christmas? I’m not talking about the obvious seasonal foods, but rather the ~special~ food we get in for Christmas. For us its fancy cheese, nice sausages for Christmas breakfast and lots of fresh fruit juice. You can start ploughing through your festive treats before the big day.
